My
paintings begin with the allure of an industrial structure.
I am fascinated by the geometry of architectural forms.
Their dominant silhouettes intersect the sky to create
geometric patterns and negative shapes. The work begins
with my camera, documenting the structure from all angles.
Sketches distill the structure to essential shapes and
values. The painting process becomes a way of ordering
these spatial planes and blocks of color. The act of
abstracting these existing structures simplifies their
intricate nature to a core geometric language. Through
observation, documentation, and abstraction, I rebuild
these man-made structures. Their original colors are
saturated to emphasize the shapes and negative spaces that
the average passerby ignores. Reconstructing these
architectural delights reveals to me the awe of what humans
are capable of, the untold history these objects hold, and
the impact these structures have on our landscape.
